If the 20-week ultrasound shows that the placenta may be lying low, we often want to look at the position of the placenta again around 30-32 weeks to see whether the placenta has moved up nicely.
During the 20 weeks, it is checked whether the placenta is more than 2 cm from the cervix. This is the case in 85% of cases.
If this is not the case, fortunately the placenta usually still moves up and becomes further away from the cervix and therefore from the exit. Whether this is indeed the case is checked during the placental localization ultrasound, around 30-32 weeks of pregnancy.
This ultrasound is always done vaginally. Of course, we also look at your baby externally and will usually also look at the growth and the amniotic fluid.
If it turns out that the placenta is not far enough away from the cervix (at least 2 cm) at the time of delivery, the baby must be born via caesarean section.
This ultrasound is reimbursed by insurance.
For 3.50 euros, the sonographer will take separate photos and images for you, which you will receive via your phone.
