For many people, a miscarriage leads to uncertainty and questions about the future. There may be mixed feelings about trying again, hope, but also fear of another miscarriage. The differences in processing between partners can create tension in a relationship, which also affects future plans. Or maybe this was the only chance for a baby, due to age or fertility.
A new pregnancy can bring a lot of fear and tension. Especially if there are multiple miscarriages. Only you can decide for yourself (with your partner) when you are ready for a new pregnancy. For some women it is nice to become pregnant quickly and this helps them cope with the loss. For others, it is important to first come to terms with the loss and feel peace in their body and mind before they dare to embark on a new pregnancy. In a new pregnancy you always take this experience with you, which will make you less open-minded and sometimes even tense. Also discuss/mention this with the midwife and/or ultrasound technician.
If you want to become pregnant again, it is wise to live as healthily as possible. This means eating a healthy and varied diet, not drinking excessively, not smoking, and not taking medication without consultation. However, it is not possible to prevent a miscarriage with certainty. For every woman who wants to become pregnant (again), the advice is to use a 0.4 mg folic acid tablet daily. If you did not use folic acid prior to the miscarriage, you do not have to feel guilty about it. Folic acid does not reduce the risk of miscarriage, but it does reduce the risk of a child with spina bifida. In most cases, a subsequent pregnancy goes well, even in women who have had more than one miscarriage. You can simply register with the midwife again for an ultrasound during your next pregnancy.
